Defining Successby Stewart Belsham January 4, 2007 - Happy New Year to all! |

I have been reflecting on New Year’s Resolutions and why I have always dreaded them. It seems that failing is almost guaranteed, mostly because I define success unrealistically. I find myself ignoring the old adage to make goals SMART (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic and Time-bound) . I also believe that goals need to inspire us. While “I will lose ½ a pound by next week” is all of the above, I feel silly about celebrating this victory with a quarter-pounder.
At the start of the New Year, as we review our projects, are we excited? Pick a project, and ask yourself “This project will be a success if… “, and no you’re not allowed to say “it is completed on time, on budget, and to specification”, then ask “I will feel successful on this project if…”. Are the two aligned?
My challenge to each of us is to make sure we are working towards something that we really want. Document these and then ask – What do I need to do to achieve this, and what do I need from others to meet these goals. Do you have a contract with your colleagues and family?
I am looking forward to this year for us, our partnerships with InSource and our relationships with our customers.
